Receiving Money

1. Is there a service fee when receiving the money transfer? Is there a fee or expense that the Receiver must pay?

Receiving money at a Western Union® Agent location is generally free.
Note, there may be a tax, etc., that incurs depending on the country where the money is received.

2. Which countries can funds be sent to?

You can send money to over 500,000 locations in more than 200 countries.

3. I want to receive or pick up money from a convenience store in Japan, what do I need to do?

You cannot pick up or receive money at a convenience store in Japan. This service only allows you to send money overseas from Japan. You cannot receive a money transfer from overseas.

4. Can I send the MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number) to the Receiver via email?

To send the MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number) to the Receiver, use a secure method such as the telephone to inform the MTCN directly to the Receiver.
When making the money transfer request, be sure that the Sender himself or herself confirms the transaction details with the Receiver beforehand by telephone, etc.
It is extremely dangerous to send money after only receiving a request via email.

5. How do I receive the money transfer?

The Receiver should go to the nearest Western Union® Agent location.
Enter the required items in the receipt column on the money transfer request form. Submit the specified documents that verify your identity and the MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number) to the clerk.
The clerk will give you a copy of the receipt and the cash for the money transfer.

6. How can I find out if the money transfer was received or not?

Click on the "Check Money Transfer Status" link located on the Western Union® homepage : www.westernunion.co.jp.
You can check the current status of the money transfer request by entering the name of the Sender and the Money Transfer Control Number.
In addition, you can find out by calling (0120-3630-44; Free Dial: Mobile phone/PHS are accepted).
(9:00-22:00, everyday)

7. How is the Western Union® money transfer paid out?

When the receiver picks up the money transfer, the clerk at the Agent location will pay out the Receiver in cash.
Note, there are some countries in which payment is conducted using a remittance check, cashier's check or payment card.
